Surface analysis techniques employed include SIMS (secondary ion mass spectrometry), IRAS (infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy) and UPS (ultraviolet photo-electron spectroscopy). The system was designed to study metal-gas interactions in situ under various experimental conditions. Totally oil free ultra-high vacuum is achieved by using a combination of cryo, turbomolecular and ion pumps.
